After its earliest successes in 1985 at the Evian Competition and in 1987 at the Borciani Competition in Reggio Emilia, Quatuor Sine Nomine of Lausanne, Switzerland has been pursuing an international career and appears in concert in many European and American cities, most notably in London (Wigmore Hall), Am¬sterdam (Concertgebouw) , New York (Carnegie Hall) and Salzburg (Mozarteum).
Widely respected artists have had an influence on the development of the quartet: after Rose Dumur Hemmerling, who passed her passion for music on to the ensemble, opening the door to the great string quartet tradition, the Melos Quartet must also be mentioned. The quartet's work with Henri Dutilleux during recording of his composition "Ainsi la Nuit" was also a milestone in the quartet's history.
Ongoing collaboration with other musicians constantly enriches the ensemble's per¬spective. Close relationships with other string quartets have ensued over the years, including with the Berlin-based Vogler Quartet and the Carmina Quartet of Zurich.
The Sine Nomine Quartet has a vast repertoire ranging from Haydn all the way to 21st century works, including rarely performed music such as the Op. 7 Enescu Octet. The quartet has given many premiere performances of new work some of which were dedicated to the ensemble. The quartet's discography is comprehensive: Alongside the most important works within traditional string quartet repertoire (including complete recordings of the quartets by Schubert and Brahms), Arriaga quartets and the works of Turina have also been recorded, as well as piano quintets by Furtwängler and Goldmark.
In 2001, the quartet initiated the Festival Sine Nomine in Lausanne, which is now successfully held every two years.
The Sine Nomine Quartet receives funding from the city of Lausanne and the canton of Vaud. Its performing career, especially internationally, is also supported by the Association des Amis du Quatuor Sine Nomine, which was founded in 1994.
Sine Nomine, meaning "without a name," is intended to symbolize the constant endeavor of devoting ones efforts to composers and the performance of their works.

Namhafte Persönlichkeiten haben die Entwicklung des Quartetts gefordert: nach Rose Dumur Hemmerling, die ihm ihre Leidenschaft vererbt und ihm das Tor zur groBen Streichquartetttradition geöffnet hat, ist auch das Melos-Quartett zu erwähnen. Die Begegnung mit Henri Dutilleux anlässlich der Aufnahme seines Werks „Ainsi la Nuit“ stellte ebenfalls einen Meilenstein dar.
Regelmäfliges Arbeiten mit anderen Musikern ist fur das Ensemble eine ständige Bereicherung. Enge Bindungen zu anderen Streichquartetten sind entstanden, unter anderem zum Vogler Quartett aus Berlin und zum Carmina Quartett aus Zurich.
Das Sine Nomine Quartett spielt ein umfangreiches Repertoire, von Haydn bis zum 21. Jahrhundert, einschlielîlich selten dargebotener Werke wie das Enesco-Oktett. Es hat viele zeitgenössische Werke uraufgefuhrt, von denen einige ihm gewidmet sind. Seine Diskografie ist umfassend: neben den groBen klassischen Werken (u.a. Gesamt- aufnahmen von Schubert und Brahms) wurden auch Arriaga-Quartette und Werke von Turina eingespielt, sowie die Klavierquintette von Furtwängler und Goldmark.
2001 initiierte das Quartett in Lausanne das Festival Sine Nomine, das seither alle zwei Jahre erfolgreich stattfindet.
Das Quatuor Sine Nomine wird durch die Stadt Lausanne und den Kanton Waadt gefordert. Seine Karriere - insbesondere im Ausland - wird aufierdem von der 1994 gegriindeten Association des Amis du Quatuor Sine Nomine unterstiitzt.
Sine Nomine - der namenlose Name möchte das Bestreben symbolisieren, sich immer in den Dienst der Komponisten und der Werke zu stellen, die es interpretiert.

Nell'esplorare il repertorio per quartetto d'archi, il più ricco e ampio della musica classica, il Quartetto Sine Nomine di Losanna (Svizzera) ha cercato, fin dalla sua fondazione, di dare armonia e coerenza alle sue interpretazioni, affrontando con entusiasmo anche le opere contemporanee.
Ogni sua scelta è animata dal desiderio profondo di vivere una passione e trasmetterla ad un pubblico vasto e eterogeneo, ed è con questo obiettivo che nel 2001 è nato il Festival Sine Nomine di Losanna, di cui il Quartetto è promotore e organizzatore.
Il primo premio al Concorso Internazionale d’Evian, nel 1985, seguito nel 1987 dalla vittoria al Concorso Borciani di Reggio Emilia, ha segnato l'inizio di una carriera internazionale che ha visto il Sine Nomine suonare in sale prestigiose quali Wigmore Hall di Londra, Concertgebouw di Amsterdam, Carnegie Hall di New York, Auditorio Nacional di Madrid, Tonhalle di Zurigo, Konzerthaus di Berlino, Gewandhaus di Lipsia, Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Théâtre du Châtelet, Radio France,Salle Gaveau, Auditorium del Louvre a Parigi e ai festival di Lucerna, Vevey-Montreux, Roque d'Anthéron, Radio-France Montpellier, Schleswig-Hostein, Lockenhaus, George Enesco. A suonato anche nel Mozarteum di Salzburg.
Varie personalità hanno svolto un ruolo importante nella formazione e nella carriera del Quartetto, tra cui Rose Dumur, il Quartetto Melos, Paul Tortelier, Sofia Gubaidulina, Henri Dutilleux, che ha scelto il Sine Nomine per la registrazione di “Ainsi la Nuit”, e non ultimo il Modern Jazz Quartett.
Numerose sono le collaborazioni che hanno permesso al Quartetto Sine Nomine di condividere con altri musicisti la passione per la musica da camera; tra gli altri, Michel Dalberto, Bruno Canino, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Paul Lewis, Michel Portal, Edouard Brunner, Pascal Moragues, Paul Meyer, Romain Guyot, Martin Fröst, Heinz Holliger, Emmanuelle Bertrand, Adrian Brendel, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Antoine Tamestit, Rafaël Oleg, e i quartetti Vogler e Carmina.
Il repertorio del Quartetto Sine Nomine è estremamente vasto, da Haydn a Kurtag, ed include anche opere raramente eseguite come gli ottetti di Mendelssohn e Enesco ed i concerti per quartetto ed orchestra di Schönberg, Martinu e Schulhoff. Molte opere sono state composte per il Sine Nomine da autori contemporanei tra cui Balissat, Blank, Hosokawa, Hostettler e Wustin.
Ha registrato per Erato, Cascavelle, Timpani, Claves e l'ampia discografia comprende i classici, Mozart, Haydn e Beethoven, l'integrale dei quartetti di Brahms e Schubert, ma anche Arriaga, Turina e Furtwängler.
Parallelamente all'attività concertistica i quattro musicisti sono impegnati a trasmettere ai loro allievi del Conservatorio di Losanna uno degli insegnamenti fondamentali della musica da camera: trovare il proprio posto nel rispetto degli altri.
